Wellies

The weather has been so fickle of late here. On Saturday night it rained in a super-heavy fashion after building all day, then yesterday was cool and fine, and today the sky is overcast and a gentle cooling rain soothed my ride to school. I realised half way along my route that the rain was so light that it would be better to put away my umbrella and stay cool. I saw one other young guy who had the same idea. For the heavier rain though, I need some proper rain gear.

This brings me to Wellington boots - or wellies. Now, this is the term I use for 'rubber boots'. I had an interesting conversation with other ALTs (imported teacher types) the other day while trudging along in the pouring rain. "I could do with some wellies," I said. "What?" ... US ALT: "Those are called galoshes." Australian ALT: "We call them gum boots". Hmm, galoshes and gum boots - great words!

Mog wore galoshes for his Bond filming didn't he?
I got the impression that they were giant wellies that you can wear over (around?) your shoes.

Really? Maybe, I don't know - are you saying they are not normal wellies? How about those super fishermen type ones?!

The ones that come attached to waterproof trousers? I believe those are called waders or something.

Ah yes, I think you are right there. I need to buy some waterproof trousers actually, for the heavy rain. Waders might be a little OTT ;)

wellington boots worn on wet or sunny days are very exciting i wear many pairs even different colours

I love wellies!I reciently received a pair for Christmas after pestering my mother for several months. Since I live in America it was extremely hard to locate a pair. My mother thinks that I have gone mad and currently I am not ruling out the possibility all together. What a pity that nearly nobody in the US has ever heard of wellingtons ,wellies or whatever else you like to call them. Good luck with the painting thing if it is still needed.

Look here for wellies they are great sooo funky
