Shadow Catchers

There’s a really good exhibition on at the V&A at the moment called Shadow Catchers: Camera-less Photography.

Photography without a camera? Madness, I hear you say. That was my initial reaction but I was amazed with what can be done without a lens. Each of the five artists has a different style from elegant silhouettes of figures to very simple and abstract images.

One thing which occurred to me was how distracting captions next to art/photography can be. It’s very difficult not to jump straight to a caption next to something to be told what it suggests to the viewer when actually, surely it’s better to look at something and to ask yourself what comes to your own mind first.

Actually, I find myself thinking how distracting titles can also be when looking at photographs, too. Maybe I’ll remove titles altogether from my photography website.
