Despite having only met a particular Japanese husband and wife for the first time they asked me directly within the first ten minutes if I had any marriage plans! True, the subject of marriage was brought up by someone else, but still…
It shouldn’t really surprise me any more when this kind of thing happens but it still catches me off guard. To me, it’s amazing how much emphasis the Japanese place on marriage. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, just that it’s interesting from a cultural viewpoint.

just getting old mate
True, broken into the thirties and still on the shelf
It’s one of those questions I get asked in Japan all the time, yet when I ask it back I get funny looks like I’m being KY and asking too personal a question!
Double standards! Maybe gaijin get asked this kind of thing quite a bit??
Was that asked after they had known about your age? I don’t recall really being asked such a question (much). Maybe hitting thirty (or getting near thirty) makes people curious. By the way, was it the man or the woman that initiated the question?
I don’t think they knew my age that point. I’ve often been asked, in fact long before I turned 30.
