SFIV on iPhone

Street Fighter IV for iPhone Revealed. Is this a wind up? How cut down would SFIV have to be to even run on an iPhone? If this is for real, the novelty value would be reason enough to get an iPhone!

I think you’re underestimating the power of the iPhone and iPod Touch. :)

There are already numerous ‘big’ games available, like Grand Theft Auto, Doom, Sonic, Resident Evil, The Sims, Tetris, Rock Band, Call of Duty, FIFA, SimCity etc.

I think Nintendo and Sony are more than a little worried. And with (downloadable) games available often for a fraction of the price of the (physical) version for DS/PSP, I think it’s some fair competition. As an example, GTA was released for £30 on DS and PSP, but just £5.99 on iPhone/iPod.

Would you not consider an iPod Touch, as an alternative to an iPhone with mobile contract?

  • I think you’re underestimate the demands of the SFIV graphics engine! SFIV is entirely 3D but played in 2D, hence called ‘2.5D’. Still, if Capcom are downsampling all the graphics and have it running on an iPhone then power to them - and an iPhone for me!

A lot of those ‘big games’ are pretty simplified though, right? If they are the same as games on the DS then fair enough - GTA China Town Wars? The other day I played Resident Evil or was it Metal Gear on my mate’s iPhone. It was just a top down shooter far removed from the original title. Maybe I’m just not used to it but the controls were very fiddly, too.

Talking of controls, for a precision game like SFIV you really need tight controls which is why I think it would be more of a novelty than anything else. I really hope I’m wrong on that point.

You raise an interesting point about the iPhone competing with hand-held gaming devices. I didn’t realise there was such a price disparity when buying games…

No, I wouldn’t get an iTouch. An iTouch seems like a poor mans iPhone and you lose out on lots of functionality. You don’t always have a WiFi connection which limits you straight away. Plus it would mean one extra device in my pocket (I don’t plan on getting rid of my current mp3 player).
