At the weekend I joined some friends for a picnic beside the new Serpentine Pavillion which opened last month in Kensington Gardens. The Pavillion changes yearly the 2009 Pavillion has been designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.
Taking a quote from the official site the designers describe the design as follows:
‘The Pavilion is floating aluminium, drifting freely between the trees like smoke. The reflective canopy undulates across the site, expanding the park and sky. Its appearance changes according to the weather, allowing it to melt into the surroundings…’
Whilst I think this is a slightly exaggerated artistic take on what has actually been achieved, it is none-the-less a fascinating structure full of curves and beautiful reflections.

What a strange name “Serpentine Pavillion”. Snakes aren’t exactly cuddly nor inviting, are they?
The lake next to the Pavilion is called the Serpentine because of its shape.
