Bad Colours

Since upgrading to version 3.5 Firefox is no longer colour managed as the colo(u)r management add-on I was using is not 3.5 compatible.

Update: James kindly reminded me that the colour management can be enabled using about:config and the add-on was just an easier way of accomplishing the same thing. In Firefox 3.5 colour management is enabled by default – I had to change the mode for it to render all images properly.

Opera still doesn’t support colour management and neither does Google Chrome, which is dissapointing given it’s high speed, light-weight feel.

Shockingly, IE8 appears not to support colour management, either. Even though it won’t ship with Windows 7 in Europe isn’t it meant to be the most up-to-date browser to accompany the new OS?

Colours don’t always look good without colour management, particularly on high-gamut monitors like mine. It’s frustrating to spend time editing a photo and then not being able to view it properly once uploaded to my photo blog; nor being able to appreciate other peoples’ photography as they intended (assuming they have colour calibrated their monitor and use colour managed editing software).

By and large I suppose colour management isn’t really demanded by the masses but how many photographers out there would appreciate a properly colour managed browsers as standard?

    It’s spelt “color”. j/k :p

I thought from Firefox 3 it did have built-in color management? But you’d have to enable it or something in the about:config. I’m not sure of the extent of what you can do with it though, but maybe you’d have a better idea.

Actually, yes, I think you’re right! The add-on simply gave an easier way to enable it – how could I have forgotten that?! Thanks for reminding me, James.
